Personally, I am not interested in purchasing art from an artist that doesn’t actually create it themselves. I want to see the artists hand in the work.
I’m sure already of you know that many famous artists don’t actually do any of the creating themselves. Most famously, Jeff Koons is a visionary who does not make his work. He has a team of professionals who make it for him. No matter your thoughts on this, it’s just the way the art world works.
The other day, I met an artist who does create his own work, but doesn’t actually enjoy the creation process. If you read artists statements, you’ll often see “the process of creating is the most enjoyable part.” That holds true for me too. But this particular artist doesn’t enjoy the process at all. Instead, he only creates so he can get these creative ideas out of his head. He said to me “painting is boring.” But he’s actually good at it. I kinda love that.
What are your thoughts? Do you prefer purchasing art that is made by the artist or manufactured elsewhere? Do you, as an artist enjoy the creation process?
